When Jesus instructed us to use his name, he was essentially giving us power of attorney. When one has been given power of attorney, they have been authorized to represent and act on another’s behalf. Jesus is now in heaven. But, he has sent the Holy Spirit to live through his body on earth (the church). By giving us his name and  instructing us to use it, we are to represent him and act on his behalf until He returns.
Jesus instructed us to ask the Father for whatever we desire, in Jesus name, and he will give it to us (see John 16:23-24). Praying in the name of Jesus is much more than asking for whatever we want and adding the phrase, “in Jesus name” to the end of our petition. When we pray in the name of Jesus, we are praying as one who is representing the desires of the one we have been authorized to represent, namely, Jesus.
Jesus also instructed us to represent him to the sick and demonized by acting on his behalf, as we heal the sick and cast out demons in his name. “These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, …..They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” – Mark 16:17,18
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” – Colossians 3:17. As an authorized representative of Jesus Christ, share the good news of who he is and what he has done for mankind. Heal the sick in his name. Cast out demons in his name. Pray in his name. Serve others in his name. Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of Jesus!
